Grimlock Joins the Fleet
The homelab has a new member. Say hi to Grimlock.
I was not looking to grow the fleet, but a Lenovo ThinkCentre M920q showed up for very little money, and I have a soft spot for those tiny form factor machines: no fan noise worth mentioning, sits anywhere, draws almost nothing. Cheap and quiet was the whole brief, and it delivers on both.
The spec is nothing to write home about, and that is rather the point:
- Lenovo ThinkCentre M920q (
10RS0014US) - Intel Core i5-8400T, 6 cores / 6 threads
- 32GB RAM
- 500GB SSD, plus a 1TB NVMe I added myself, because 500GB disappears fast once containers start piling up
- Ubuntu Server
Nothing here is going to win a benchmark against Optimusprime, but that was never the job.
First mission
Grimlock's job from day one is to run part of my Hermes fleet. It already has its own Hermes admin agent looking after it, same pattern as the rest of the homelab: the agent handles the day to day on its own machine, I keep the credentials and anything destructive.
This is very much the first mission and not the last one. As the fleet grows I expect Grimlock to pick up more, and I will probably regret not adding a bigger disk sooner. For now it is doing exactly what I bought it for.
