lookup windows machines from your mac (lion) - smbutil

Share on:

I am back again with my Mac on a corporate network - based on M$ Windows. Fortunately I am well integrated in the network. I did not know that Apple dropped the open Samba implementation in Lion and now is providing it's own version. I found this article while trying to figure out, where the nmblookup command is.

There are cases that I want to communicate with Windows machines using the Terminal. If I try to enter their domain name it wont work (at least I have not found a decent way to make it work - yes I have filled the WINS entry on network preferences).

So what I do when I want to ssh or telnet or even ping a windows machine I use (as a comment in the article suggests) : smbutil lookup

e.g.

1 smbutil lookup srv1

Got response from 193.16.9.13 IP address of srv1: 193.16.15.225
